Haylie Katherine Duff was born on February 19, 1985, in Houston, Texas, to parents Bob and Susan Duff. Sister Hilary came into the family two and a half years later, in September 1987. The girls took up ballet at a very young age, and toured with the Cechetti Ballet during the mid-'90s. Haylie's outgoing personality led to her interest in acting and music, which she began pursuing around the age of 10.
Duff made her screen debut in an uncredited role in the 1997 miniseries True Women. That same year, she landed the role of Martha Jean Pruitt in the made-for-television movie Hope. In 1998, she played Gina Addams in the film Addams Family Reunion, and was cast as a "Girl in Crowd" in an episode of Amanda Bynes' The Amanda Show, which aired in December 1999.
The actress made guest appearances on two top network programs, namely Chicago Hope in February 2000, and a pair of episodes of Boston Public, which aired during the winter of 2001. Other film appearances during the same period include the roles of Jessica in 2000's Dreams in the Attic and Wendy in The Newman Shower (2001).
Played got the opportunity to work with sister Hilary on the latter's hit sitcom Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel when she was cast in the recurring role of Lizzie's Cousin Amy for a pair of episodes that aired during the show's 2002-'03 season. Haylie also provided her vocal talent for Hilary's 2002 Christmas album, Santa Claus Lane.
Duff portrayed a young Faith Mitchell in a February 2003 episode of Third Watch and won a part in the movie I Love Your Work that same year. She contributed the song "Girl in the Band" to the soundtrack of The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003), and two more original compositions, namely "Sweet Sixteen" and "Inner Strength," to Hilary's triple platinum debut solo album, Metamorphosis.
The Duff sisters appeared as the real life Weiss sisters from the girl group the Shangri-Las, performing their 1964 hit "Leader of the Pack" on an episode of American Dreams entitled "Change a Comin'" in 2003. Haylie got Punk'd on the show's second season opener, which aired in October 2003.
The sisters made an appearance on ABC's news program 20/20 in May 2004, for a segment focusing on siblings. The Duff duo teamed up for a remake of the Go-Go's 1981 hit "Our Lips Are Sealed," which was on the soundtrack of A Cinderella Story (2004), starring Hilary. Haylie contributed a solo number, "One In This World," also featured on the soundtrack.
In addition to projects involving her sister, Duff kept busy in 2004 with a guest appearance on That's So Raven and a role as popular girl Summer Wheatley in Napoleon Dynamite, which was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and became a surprise commercial hit upon its theatrical release. The 2004 films The After Killer and The House can be added to Haylie's resume while Dishdogz will hit theaters in 2005. She sang "Whatever Life," which was heard in the Disney Channel's made-for-TV movie Stuck in the Suburbs (2004), and "Sweetest Pain" for the film Raising Helen (2004).
